The best man has a vital role to play in planning a wedding
Make sure that your wedding planner has a good relationship with him. Introduce them long before the wedding is due to be held.
While it's common to assume that a best friend should double up as a best man, think long and hard if he really is the one for the job. The role of best man calls for someone thoroughly reliable, cool and collected, with exceptionally good burnout. He will be the "go to" man of the moment. He must also give a rousing speech and organise the stag night. Arranging the stag is the ultimate responsibility, making sure it happens well before the do and that the groom gets home safely with all his dignity intact. He also makes sure the ushers attend their fittings, and the wedding rehearsal. On the wedding day, details are endless. The best man checks the groom to make sure he has all the necessary documents for the wedding and honeymoon, brings the rings and gets the groom to the church well ahead of time. A wad of cash is a good idea as well, in case the befuddled groom fails to pay the caterers or musicians. On arriving at the church, the best man makes sure the ushers put on their buttonholes and that order-of-service sheets are distributed when seating the guests. At the reception, there is yet another list – the best man liaises with the toastmaster, or if there isn't one, whoever is responsible for speeches, cutting the cake and reading messages, cards and emails. After thanking fellow attendants and the reception's hosts, the best man must deliver an inspiring, humorous and non-risque speech.
In addition, the best man dances with the chief bridesmaid during the reception. He keeps the bride and groom on track for leaving the ceremony, alerting the guests when they are about to go. He is also responsible for keeping travel documents safe during the ceremony, and ensuring that their luggage accompanies them for the first night and/or honeymoon. Not only that, he is also responsible for returning a hired dress (including the groom's) and making sure that the gifts are somewhere safe until the newlyweds return. In contrast, the chief bridesmaid's list is not very long, but remember, it is her duty to keep the bride calm and happy. Don't be pressurised into choosing a chief bridesmaid who doesn't inspire total confidence (can she mutate into your own personal Wonder Woman when required?) Chief bridesmaid duties include arranging the hen night a few weeks prior to the big day, helping the bride get dressed, and sorting out the younger bridesmaids and their duties. The chief bridesmaid also waits for the bride outside the church, providing last-minute checks on her hair and make-up before she swans up the aisle. At the altar, she takes the bride's bouquet. During the reception she dances with the best man and takes charge of the bride's dress if she changes before going away.
